Posted by admin on December 22, 2008

Roe Deer are native to Britain and have been for over 10,000 years, when the Roe Deer is a adult they weigh between 10 to 25kg and are 60 to 75cm tall at shoulder, bucks which are  ales are usually slightly larger than does - females. The colouration of Roe Deer in the summer is reddish brown and in the winter they appear pale brown or grey, and sometimes even black.

Roe Deer live for a maximum of 16 years and Bucks rarely exceed 5 years, does (females) 6 to 7 years. Heavy mortality at and shortly after birth and during first winter. Roe Deer like to live in small groups so they are social animals but only in small numbers, especially in winter.

The deer are known to select different food types including herbs, brambles, ivy, heather, bilberry & coniferous tree shoots. They like to live in woodland and forest, but may also be found high up in mountainous areas. They can be found all over England including Scotland and Wales, but are rare in the Midlands.

Roe deer are active throughout the 24-hour period but make more use of open spaces during the hours of darkness in populations experiencing frequent disturbance. Peak times of activity are at dawn and dusk. Long periods are spent “lying up”, which is where the deer lies down to ruminate between feeding bouts.
